Long-Distance Training Program White Wind Zen Community's Long-distance Training Program was established in 1995 to support the practice of students living more than an hour's commuting distance from Dainen-ji, the monastery founded by Ven. Anzan Hoshin roshi, located in Ottawa, Canada. Soto Zen Buddhist priests are eligible for associate membership if they have received ordination in a recognized Soto Zen lineage and are in training with a Soto Zen priest who is eligible for full membership and is willing to sponsor the associate’s membership (the dharma transmitted teacher does not have to be a member). Although it is Japanese Soto Zen my vote would be for Gyobutsuji Zen Monastery in Arkansas, United States. It is English speaking, rent is incredibly cheap around that area and if you are a United States citizen already there is a ton of added benefits to staying in your own country versus Vietnam for travel. Koan training is integral to all Rinzai Zen lineages and many Soto Zen lineages. Traditional koans leave our intellectual minds bewildered. And that is the point. Each koan is wild, nuanced and a brilliant tool to teach or understand dharma. After one point, though, one begins to see redundancy in koans because there are over 3000 koans.
